About Luxury Vinyl: The LVP & LVT Guide for Coastal Homes
If we had to pick one floor for life between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic, this is it. Luxury vinyl — plank (LVP) and tile (LVT) — is waterproof, sand-tough, pet-proof, and convincing enough that guests will kneel down to check. It's the most-installed hard surface in our service area for a reason, and this guide covers everything we explain in the showroom: how it's built, how long it really lasts, what the specs mean, and where it beats (and loses to) the alternatives. Browse our luxury vinyl catalog with free shipped samples, or book a free in-home estimate and we'll bring the samples to your light.
One naming note up front: luxury vinyl is not the same as traditional sheet vinyl. Sheet vinyl is a flexible, seamless roll (and a great budget floor — we carry that too). Luxury vinyl is rigid planks and tiles that click or glue down like hardwood or stone. This page is about the planks and tiles.
What Is Luxury Vinyl, Exactly?
A luxury vinyl plank is a layered sandwich engineered for abuse: a clear wear layer on top (your armor — more on it below), a photographic design layer with today's astonishingly realistic wood and stone visuals, a waterproof core, and a backing that often includes attached underlayment. Cores come in two families: SPC (stone-plastic composite) — thinner, denser, extremely dent-resistant, the default for busy coastal homes — and WPC (wood-plastic composite) — thicker, softer, warmer, and quieter underfoot. Neither absorbs water. That's not marketing; it's chemistry.Request a free estimate
LVP vs. LVT: Plank or Tile?
Same construction, different costume. LVP mimics hardwood planks and dominates living areas, bedrooms, and open floor plans. LVT mimics ceramic, porcelain, and stone — and in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens it delivers the tile look without tile's grout maintenance, cold feet, or unforgiving hardness when a glass slips out of your hand. Some LVT can even be installed with grout for the full effect. If you love the look of tile but not living with it, LVT is the answer we show first. Why Luxury Vinyl Owns the Cape Fear Coast
- Waterproof, full stop. Wet swimsuits, dog bowls, kitchen chaos, humid Augusts — the plank itself cannot absorb water.
- Sand-ready. Quality wear layers handle our region's endless grit far better than site-finished wood.
- One floor, whole level. Continuous plank from entry to kitchen to living room — no transitions, no worry zones.
- Rental-grade resilience. Beach-rental owners standardize on LVP because turnover cleaning is a mop, not a project.
- Storm-season sense. When weather wins a round, rigid-core vinyl is the floor most likely to shrug it off — one of our most-read guides explains why SolidTech earned its hurricane-proof reputation.
How Long Does Luxury Vinyl Flooring Last?
The straight answer: 10 to 25+ years in a home, and the single biggest variable is the wear layer — the clear protective coat measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). A 12-mil floor suits calm households; 20-mil is the sweet spot for families, pets, and coastal traffic (and the minimum we recommend for rentals); 22–30-mil products carry commercial ratings and the longest warranties. Installation quality and grit control decide the rest: a properly prepped subfloor and a doormat regime will carry a 20-mil LVP floor comfortably past the 15-year mark, still looking like itself. When you compare samples, ignore the total plank thickness sales pitch — wear layer first, core second, thickness third.
Reading the Specs Like a Pro
- Wear layer (mils): the lifespan number — see above. 20-mil is our coastal default.
- Core (SPC vs. WPC): SPC for dent resistance and slab installs; WPC for warmth and quiet upstairs.
- Attached pad: saves an install step and softens sound; check what the warranty requires.
- Bevels & texture: painted bevels and embossed-in-register texture are what make a plank read as real wood from standing height.
- Warranty language: ""lifetime residential"" means little without the wear-layer number behind it — we'll translate any spec sheet you bring us.
Luxury Vinyl vs. the Alternatives
Versus laminate: laminate still wins on scratch resistance per dollar and wood-look realism at its best price points, but it's water-resistant, not waterproof — LVP takes every wet room and every ""I don't want to think about it"" household. Versus sheet vinyl: sheet is cheaper and seamless, but LVP looks more convincing, feels more substantial, and repairs plank-by-plank instead of roll-by-roll. Versus hardwood: no contest on soul — real wood is real wood — but LVP wins kitchens, baths, basements-on-slab, and any room where water gets a vote. Most whole-home projects we quote end up mixing: LVP through the wet and busy zones, wood or laminate or carpet where their strengths shine.
Brands Worth Knowing
We stock the category's originals and heavyweights. COREtec invented rigid-core LVP and still sets the benchmark. Mohawk's SolidTech line pairs waterproof cores with pet-forward warranties (its storm story is linked above). Pergo Extreme brings the laminate pioneer's realism to vinyl. Alongside them: Armstrong, Chesapeake, Congoleum, and more. Every style ships free samples, and a rotating selection sits in stock at the warehouse for projects on a deadline.
Room by Room
- Kitchens & baths: the home turf — waterproof, wipeable, grout-free (LVT for the tile look).
- Entryways & mudrooms: sand central; 20-mil wear layers earn their keep here.
- Living areas & open plans: continuous LVP is the signature coastal look.
- Bedrooms: excellent (WPC for warmth), though carpet still owns pure comfort.
- Slab foundations & sunrooms: rigid core + moisture testing = the safest hard surface over concrete in our climate.
- Rentals: the category standard, full stop.
Glue-Down or Floating? The Install Question
Most residential LVP floats: planks click together into one surface that rests over the underlayment, which installs fast, feels slightly cushioned, and handles our humidity swings gracefully. Glue-down earns its place in large open runs, rooms with rolling loads or heavy furniture, sunrooms with big temperature swings, and commercial spaces — it's dead-solid underfoot and individual planks can be replaced without unclicking a room. Neither is ""better""; each product is engineered for one or both methods, and matching the method to the room is part of what our estimate visit settles. What both share: the subfloor has to be flat, dry, and proven so — which is why testing comes first.
Coastal Style Notes
What the Cape Fear coast is actually choosing right now: lighter white-oak and driftwood visuals that bounce beach light around, wider and longer planks that calm open floor plans, matte low-gloss finishes that hide sand between sweeps, and warm honey mid-tones edging out the gray wave of the last decade. In LVT, large-format stone looks in soft warm grays are quietly replacing busy travertine patterns. Bring photos of your cabinets and trim to the showroom — undertone matching is where we earn our keep.

What Luxury Vinyl Costs
LVP spans from budget-friendly to premium — wear layer, core, brand, and attached pad move the price, and installation is efficient compared to wood or tile. Per our no-gimmicks policy, the number you get is real from day one: a free in-home measure, an itemized quote covering material, prep, and labor, and financing for bigger projects. Get your free estimate and compare us against any box-store bid — we like those conversations.
Installation: The Part That Decides Everything
Waterproof planks over a wet slab is still a failed floor — which is why our professional installation leads with moisture testing and subfloor prep, then the right system (floating click or glue-down) per product and room, proper expansion gaps, and clean transitions and trim. If you want to understand why we're stubborn about the testing step, read our guide to subfloor moisture before installing laminate or vinyl — it's the difference between a 20-year floor and a callback.
Living With It
Care is almost insultingly easy: sweep or vacuum the grit, damp-mop with a vinyl-safe cleaner, felt pads under furniture, no wax, no steam mops. Households with claws should also see our guide to pet-friendly floors that still look designer, and the Luxury Vinyl 101 resource center keeps short answers to everything else.

Luxury Vinyl FAQs
The plank itself, yes — it cannot absorb water. What no floor can promise is what happens beneath it in a flood; that's a subfloor story, and it's why moisture testing and honest prep come standard on our installations.
10–25+ years depending mostly on wear layer: 12-mil for quiet households, 20-mil for families, pets, and coastal traffic, 22-mil+ for commercial-grade longevity. Grit control and proper installation carry it the rest of the way.
Tile wins on absolute permanence and heat resistance. LVT wins on comfort, warmth, no grout maintenance, faster installation, and mercy toward dropped glasses and standing backs. In coastal bathrooms and laundries, most of our customers choose LVT and don't look back.
Very often, yes — rigid-core LVP installs over well-bonded existing hard floors and over slabs after moisture testing and leveling. We'll confirm what your rooms qualify for during the free estimate.
It's the floor we recommend most for pets: waterproof for accidents, scratch-resistant at 20-mil, and textured finishes hide claw traffic. Pair with a washable rug for their sliding-into-the-kitchen habit.
Wet rooms and worry-free living: LVP. Maximum scratch resistance and wood realism per dollar in drier rooms: laminate. Whole-home projects usually mix both — we'll map it room by room at your estimate.
Yes — one of LVP's underrated advantages. A floating plank can be swapped by unclicking to it (or, faster, with a cut-and-replace technique), and glue-down planks replace individually. Keep one spare box from your install; future-you will be grateful.
It photographs like wood, reads "move-in ready," and removes the worn-carpet objection — strong sale-readiness for the dollar, especially in rental-heavy and family markets. In premium neighborhoods, real hardwood still carries the prestige; we'll be straight with you about which your street rewards.
