Synthetic layers of vinyl are pressed together into 8-millimeter design layers, with a backing layer and a top layer. Some manufacturers even put a protective layer on top of the top layer to preserve the floor's life. The surface layer protects against scratches, scuffs, and nicks on the floor. The flooring itself is waterproof because it is composed of PVC, a standard construction material that is entirely resilient against water.
